Common Ukrainian Eurypterids
Abundant eurypterid specimens have been available for sale for many years and, like the specimen shown here, are quite similar to the many occurrences in New York - especially those of the Late Silurian Bertie Group. I purchased this specimen on Ebay as I was sure I just couldn't run off to the Ukraine to collect fossils. This is one great specimen.
Thus far, specimens I have observed in- dicate conditions quite similar to those of the Late Silurian Bertie Group of New York and Ontario, Canada. Incoming currents or storm waves appear to have collected the eurypterids and fragments into windrows. The slab shown here not only has what appear to be 'complete' animals, but also abundant debris.
A few specimens show the occurrence of abundant ostracods and at least one cephalopod has been noted. No doubt, the fauna is quite "Bertielike" with pterygotids, and an ensemble of other eurypterids and peculiar animal and plant remains.
What is the precise age of this fauna relative to the New York sequences? I have not seen many comments on this situa- tion. We still have a lot to learn.
